2022 Deckchair Cinema Lineup
The Polygon is pleased to present Deckchair Cinema. Always by donation, courtesy of BMO Financial Group, you are invited to enjoy classic films under the stars on Cates Deck out front of the Gallery. Attendees can make themselves comfortable by bringing their own blankets or low chairs. Seating available on a first-come, first-serve basis. A concession stand at The Gallery will offer tasty snacks and off-sale beverages from local wineries and breweries to enjoy al fresco on the publicly licensed deck. Films start at sundown, music courtesy of some of the city’s best DJs begins at 7pm each Thursday. Your donation also includes admission to the gallery to see our summer exhibition Ghosts of the Machine.

Carts of Darkness
In the picture-postcard community of North Vancouver, local bottle pickers have turned the act of binning into a thriving subculture of shopping cart racing. Murray Siple, a former snowboarder and sport film director injured in a serious car accident ten years ago, returns to filmmaking to capture their story in the documentary Carts of Darkness. Shot in stunning high-definition and featuring tracks from Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, Vetiver, Bison, and Alan Boyd, of Little Sparta, Carts of Darkness borrows the cinematic language of extreme sports films to capture the risk and intensity of life lived on the very edge.

Cleo from 5 to 7
Agnès Varda eloquently captures Paris in the sixties with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) set adrift in the city as she awaits test results of a biopsy. A chronicle of the minutes of one woman’s life, Cléo from 5 to 7 is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.

Based on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel about her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces Satrapi’s growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.

Smoke Signals
Arnold (Gary Farmer) rescued Thomas (Evan Adams) from a fire when he was a child. Thomas thinks of Arnold as a hero, while Arnold’s son Victor (Adam Beach) resents his father’s alcoholism, violence and abandonment of his family. Uneasy rivals and friends, Thomas and Victor spend their days killing time on a Coeur d’Alene reservation in Idaho and arguing about their cultural identities. When Arnold dies, the duo set out on a cross-country journey to Phoenix to retrieve Arnold’s ashes.

Dr. Atsuko Chiba works as a scientist by day and, under the code name “Paprika,” is a dream detective at night. Atsuko and her colleagues are working on a device called the DC Mini, which is intended to help psychiatric patients, but in the wrong hands it could destroy people’s minds. When a prototype is stolen, Atsuko/Paprika springs into action to recover it before damage is done.
